I can’t speak on if Wicked is good or not, I haven’t seen the movie or the play. This is a very interesting discussion though. I normally wouldn’t have a problem with a certain movie being remade, problem is, way too many remakes that I have seen mostly tend to follow the same trend, and that is trying way too hard to appeal to modern day audiences. If I had to give an example, I’ll discuss The Grinch remake from 2018. I watched this like 3 years ago give or take, and I really disliked it because all they did was take the original story plot and insert a lot of unnecessary filler and modern day pop culture references, and those pop culture references really made the movie feel dated despite only being a few years old at that point. I know that sounds weird, but that is how I felt watching it. And I understand the original cartoon is only about 30 minutes and they have to fill in for a movie length, but there is other ways they can go about it. The original cartoon is a timeless classic because it does not rely on pop culture references or any of that, it’s a timeless classic that teaches kids and adults that Christmas isn’t about Presents, it’s about showing kindness and love to our family and friends. That’s a timeless message right there, and simply and perfectly delivered in about 30 minutes. That’s just one out of many examples.
Oh and yes, I agree 100% that Wizard of Oz (1939) is an absolute timeless classic! I loved it watching it as a kid, and I still would now as a 26 year old adult!
The Grinch remake is especially bad because it infers the Grinch's behavior was directly caused by the Who's themselves. Quite literally taking a very simple story of a person who had been embracing their negative traits observing genuine grace and being transformed, and turning it into "Actually he was only REALLY bad because the people he was bad to had hurt him."
There's a lot to unpack from that film, but almost everything made in the last 30 years has similar elements of detrimental psyop embedded within.
